In every culture fruit, flowers, and plants have specific or symbolic meanings. As symbols of living wholeness, they are a nonverbal language that we often use when words fail us.
Mudras, are another non verbal language. Ritualized, symbolic hand gestures, most often associated with spirituality, mudras are also found in every culture.
In the Offering series, Witness, Sermon, Karuna, I combine these nonverbal languages to explore the bouquets created by the interaction of gesture and flowers.
I love watching people use their hands to express themselves. I believe our first language is our body. That’s how we communicate as children, when we are without a shared language, or when we are overcome by emotion. Using a hand as symbol in these reliefs allows its expression to be very specific and universal at the same time.
